Simple Patio Design Tips

Share |

Creating a nice patio takes some thought and consideration to your budget and environment. In some cases, if you have a limited budget, taking advantage of what you already have near your patio is beneficial. Several other things to consider when designing a patio are comfort and accessibility. Simple things like enough seating and shade are important factors.

In most cases, having a shaded area on your patio is very important, especially if you live in a hot environment. One option for shade includes setting up your chairs underneath the canopy of a large tree. Awnings are also an effective option for shade but can be pricey depending on the type you purchase.

Peaceful Sounds

Another way to make your patio relaxing is by choosing decorations that provide peaceful sounds. Wind chimes provide a relaxing and soothing environment and are rather inexpensive. Water fountains are also soothing and come in many sizes. Small fountains that also play music may be small enough to display on table. However, larger fountains are also relaxing, but may be more expensive and attract mosquitoes.

Lighting is also important to consider when creating an atmosphere for your patio. Try using different lights to provide ambiance to specific areas of your patio that you wish to highlight. Christmas styled clear lights or hanging lights can also provide an interesting flare to your patio if done tactfully.

Plants make highly decorative accessories to any patio. You can add tropical plants and flowers in containers to your patio to add color. You can also create privacy for your patio using vine plants to fill out the open areas. Planter boxes can also add some more vegetation to your walls or window ledges.

Pathways can give your patio a sense of direction and a more organized look. Stepping stones or neatly maintained gravel is all you need for a pathway. Make sure your pathways are free of weeds or other debris. Some common locations for pathways to lead too include back gates, pools, guest houses, garages and utility sheds. Make sure the path has some kind of lighting either by small ground lights or generally patio lighting.

Bird Feeders and Houses

Not only do bird feeders and houses look aesthetically pleasing, but they attract beautiful wildlife. Many people will hang bird feeders from patio beams next to wind chimes or other decorations. Bird feeders come in many shapes and sizes and specialties such as humming bird feeders.

Make sure you have enough seating for your family and at least a few guests. Patio furniture specifically made for weather resistance will last much longer and be a cost effective investment. Some simple patio furniture such as patio bench swings can be very accommodating.
