Arboretum in Dallas
Arboretum is a venue for various festivals, concerts, art exhibitions and other events. It is favorite place for newlyweds, fashion photographers and tourists. The visitors can rest and dine on the terrace or in DeGolyer restaurant throughout the year.
Dallas can not claim to be a green city, but the area around White Rock Lake, on which the Arboretum and Botanical Garden are located, is a true oasis in the modern metropolis. Almost 70 hectares of land in just 15 minutes of walk from the downtown are occupied by manicured gardens and woodland, in which you can find historic mansions. Jonsson Garden has one of the world’s largest collections of azaleas, which bloom in the spring. Almost 6 hectares are occupied by chrysanthemum, which adorn this garden in fall.
During the hot summer you can find many secluded, shady places in the Dallas Arboretum, where the temperature is lowered by sprayers to comfortable level. Of course you can explore most of the gardens for a couple of hours, although this is a great place to linger here for reading and relaxing.
Many places in the Arboretum are decorated with Dale Chihuly’s sculptures of glass. Bright, fanciful shapes of colored glass look spectacular among greenery in the daylight. But you can get even more memorable experience from these places in the evening, when each sculpture is glowing.
Perhaps you can get the most vivid impressions of the Arboretum in fall, when gardens are decorated by bright orange pumpkins on the eve of Halloween. Weekend before Halloween is a great event for the Arboretum. The gardens are decorated with the maze of hay bales, green sculpture and a variety of pumpkins of different shapes and colors.
