DIY Pathway Tips

Pathways are great in a way that they add a sense of harmony and structure to the outdoors. They are widely used in Japanese garden layouts, but generally they can also be used as walkways between the different plantings. Well, probably if you want to make the pathway, you already know the location, so now it is time to consider the size and materials of your DIY path project, inspired by the ehow tutorial.

So, among the most popular choices for materials are the paver stones, bricks and some prefer a mixed material pathway, mixing gravel and stone. Outdoortheme presents a quick review of making the paver path from mixed materials. Once, you determine the materials, it is time to think of the pathway form. The pathways can be straight, they can be curvy or they can even be just simple stones with no apparent shape. The form of the pathway can be laid out by marking it with little posts and a rope.

First you need to have the base for the paver stones, you will need to cover the area with paver base for approximately four inches. Therefore, you need to know the total area of the path to calculate the amount of paver base. After the paver base, comes the leveling sand usually, about one inch would be enough. Always level out the surface before going to the next step.

Now, it is time to settle the pavers, and make sure that you put them into exact locations. If you are using several paver stones in width, make sure that you have the distance in between. Now, when all of the paver stones are settled, spread some remaining sand to the area of the path. Next step is to use pebbles or gravel to fill in the space between the stones. You can use different colors, to create a dramatic effect.
