In large cities, it becomes increasingly difficult to find a space for new parks, which are really important for the cities’ residents. But the output is always there, if you turn on your imagination.

A new construction project designed by Thomas Heatherwick will become the first bridge to be built in London since 2002. The project has won the competition a pedestrian bridge design, organized by Transport for London (TfL). The project is called “Garden Bridge”. It was chosen among dozens of others for its simple and brilliant idea: it connects the north and the south of London by a lush garden.

The project involves the construction of a new 1200 feet long pedestrian bridge between the existing bridges, Waterloo and Blackfriars. It will be covered with trees and shrubs. The project is under consideration by the city authorities.

Thomas Heatherwick calls London one of the most “green” cities in the world, as it is particularly rich in gardens, parks and squares. In this context, it is particularly pleasing that TfL’s choice fell on his project developed together with British actress and model Joanna Lumley.

“It is strange to talk about something that does not exist yet, but the Garden Bridge is already alive in plans and imagination. The Garden will become a sensation in every sense. It is a place without the noise and traffic, where the only sounds will be the birds singing, bees buzzing and the noise of leaves,” Lumley says.

According to Lumley, the bridge would probably be the slowest way to cross the Thames, as people there will sit back and admire the scenery, leaning on the railing. In spring the Garden Bridge will have lawns, trees and wild flowering plants. In winter, the bridge will be decorated with Christmas trees.

“I believe that it will give Londoners and visitors serenity, beauty and magic,” she adds. Opening of the Garden Bridge, which will stretch from the Temple to the area of Southbank, is scheduled for 2016.
