Vegetable Garden Fertilizing Basics
As you know, apart from water, soil and sun of course, plants need nutrients, such as nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium, which would promote the growth of the plants. This is especially important in the edible gardening, the vegetable gardening to be precise.
Each nutrient has its own function, for instance – nitrogen helps plants to produce strong leaves, while phosphorus helps the roots to be strong. Potassium makes plants stronger for winter, so they would survive the cold and resist different diseases.
There are different types of fertilizers, which are available on the market; some of them include all of the three types of nutrients, while some sell them separately. There are also organic fertilizers, which are partially made from organic waste, such as blood meal, bone meal, hoof or horn meal. Organic fertilizers improve the soil, because they release the nutrients for a longer period of time making them accumulate in the soil. However, a drawback is that the organic fertilizing may not release the nutrients fast enough.
There are also synthetic fertilizers, that are usually more quickly to release the nutrients. They are less expensive, however they don’t improve the general characteristics of the soil, as do the organic fertilizers. The major drawback of synthetic kind of fertilizers is that if applied improperly, they might harm the earthworms, which are really important to the soil aeration.
There are liquid fertilizers, which are meant to be diluted. But the most common type of fertilizers is the dry one. The number labels on the pack indicate how much nutrients are in the fertilizer. For example 10-10-10 would mean that there is an equal proportion of the nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium in it.
