Aquaponics: Innovative Urban Farm

Share |

This project was amended and presented in summer of 2013 in London by the British company, GrowUp. They took an old cargo container and put a glass greenhouse on its roof. They started growing lettuce in the greenhouse, and breed tilapia in the container. Necessary nutrients for the growth of vegetables are taken from the water.

These nutrients are allocated to the water by the fish, or formed as a result of microbial decomposition of the remains. Thus, the water is cleaning itself daily, as toxic substances processed into useful bacteria, are perfectly absorbed by the root system of plants. This method has long been known to world science and it is called Aquaponics. However, only now this method has become accessible for masses, due to special containers called GrowUp box.

Benefits of the GrowUp boxes for Aquaponics are obvious. First of all, it is an all agricultural greening process through rational use of resources. It is aclosed system of growing fish and vegetables, which excludes whatsoever waste. There are no emissions and pollution to the environment.

Such a farm requires very little resources: food; electricity for water removing and a pump, which pumps oxygen; and water, which is spent much less in the closed cycle than on a closed ground. In other things the system is self-sufficient: the plants receive nutrients from the fish; fish continue to conduct its existence in a clean, oxygenated water. On such a farm, you can forget about herbicides and pesticides, harmful to humans. In a word, GrowUp box gives a possibility to grow organic vegetables and fish in a few hundred meters from the house by yourself.

According to the GrowUp box developers, the average yield of the container may be about 130 Ib of fish and more than 400 Ib of lettuce per year. Taking into account that the area occupied by the box is 150 ft2, the result exceeds all expectations. The developers also hope that Aquaponics in the box will be commercially viable enterprise.
